Saigon Through My Eyes – An Illustrated Exploration
A self-initiated editorial project that explores public perceptions of Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) through visual storytelling. By collecting user-generated content tagged with #saigon on Instagram, this project identifies and curates recurring themes that depict daily life and the city’s distinctive character. The focus is on two main areas: iconic architecture (such as the Notre Dame Cathedral and Nguyen Hue walking street) and everyday moments that reflect the rhythm of life in the city, from coffee shops and bustling markets to street food culture.
Each illustration is inspired by real Instagram posts and reinterpreted to capture both the visual and emotional essence of Saigon. The process involves selecting images that highlight architectural landmarks, social habits, and cultural symbols, then transforming them into hand-crafted illustrations that tell deeper stories. For instance, one piece titled “Free Tea” illustrates a common sight in the city—ice-cold tea placed in inox buckets along streets, offered freely to pedestrians, with a focus on supporting street vendors and the homeless. Another theme explores the city’s sense of community and warmth, shown through gestures like offering directions to strangers.
The project not only celebrates Saigon’s vibrant lifestyle and architectural beauty but also uncovers the human stories and small details that make the city unique. Being born in Saigon, this work is a personal homage to the culture, resilience, and spirit of the people who shape its identity.
